Traditions- Part 2

cat and witch walkingDid you enjoy reading about our traditions for holidays? Were you inspired or scared? =) In continuation here are some more of our fun Family Holiday traditions!

  • Labor Day- Labor Day is just like Memorial Day, the beach, a cookout with friends, lots of yummy food, lots of fun!
  • Halloween- We celebrate Halloween pretty much the whole month of October. We go on hay rides, pick pumpkins, make decorations, go to area activities and festivals, and eat “spooky” food like mummy dogs. =) Here in Cleveland you never know what the weather is going to be like- it could be warm and in the 60’s or snowing. Life’s fun here like that! One thing that we do try to do every year is go to Boo at the Zoo at the Cleveland Metropark Zoo, it’s a lot of fun and the kids love seeing the animals at night.
  • Dia de Los Muertos- Since I am half hispanic this is a HUGE holiday with me! This year since my mom had very recently passed I kept things light and fun, next year I will probably do more of the traditional remembrance activities. We paint our faces like calaveras, make paper masks, eat sugar skulls, and talk about what our loved ones favorite things were. We buy marigolds to set outside and generally have a great time listening to music and partying.
  • Thanksgiving- Yeah, not going to lie- we just eat for this one, lol! We usually go to either my friend’s house or my cousin’s for dinner, I always make Raspberry Chifon Pie and Klint makes Cranberry Conserve. We do ask the kids about what they are thankful for, but the food is more the tradition here. diy wonderland ornament
  • Christmas (general)- This is why Thanksgiving is so light, I am already planning our Christmas activities!! The month of December is taking up with Christmas traditions and activities- We have our Elves, Vicky and Snowflake, causing mayhem and helping around the house, we decorate with our tree and lights, we have an advent calendar with fun treats and winter activities inside. We take the kids on a fun night trip where everyone wears their pj’s, we drive around to see the lights, and drink hot cocoa. We go to GLOW at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens and Country Lights at Lake Farm Metroparks. We also go to the zoo and see Santa’s reindeer, remind them to come see us for a treat. We always make sugar cookies, applesauce and cinnamon ornaments, and donate cat and dog toys to the local shelter. Polar Express Pajama Party: Ideas and Activities for a fun holiday party with kids!
  • Christmas Eve- We spread reindeer food on the ground and leave out cookies with milk for Santa. The family all opens up a package with Christmas jammies, and we watch a Christmas movie like Elf or Polar Express.
  • Christmas Day- After opening up presents we have a big breakfast with red and green pancakes, strawberry smoothies, and such. We play with our gifts, go see a movie, and eat a lunch of spaghetti and meatballs. (My grandfather always made this growing up)

So those are the major holidays that we celebrate. There are little ones in there like National Ice Cream Day, Dress up Your Pet Day, and National Bubble Bath Day, lol that we enjoy as well. Along with the holidays we have traditions to for birthdays and seasons!!

  • Birthdays- First of all, the girls only get big birthday parties on certain milestone years- 1, 5, 10, 16, 18, and 21. Those years we go all out, invite everyone we know, and have big blow outs. On off years we do lots of little things are home. I fill their room with balloons, put streamers over the door so that they have to break out, and hang balloons over the doorway. We let the girls open birthday present right away in the morning and there is always a birthday outfit inside one. Then we do a traditional birthday breakfast of birthday cake pancakes and smoothies. The birthday girl also gets to choose lunch and dinner menus, dinner is usually at a favorite restaurant. We also do a birthday photo shoot and this year I am going to add to the tradition- The birthday girls gets a photo taken with balloons, as many balloons as the new age!! I’m so excited for this one!!!Water balloons on skewers for an instantly lovely cake topper!
  • Seasonal- Every season we go local fruit picking- strawberries, raspberries, apples, sour cherries, blueberries. It is something that the kids and I look forward to every year. (Klint HATES fruit picking, he thinks it is silly and chalks up my excitement to my questionable Mexican heritage, lol!) We also go to local festivals every year- The Medieval Faire, The Feast of Assumption in Little Italy, Lakewood Arts Fest, etc.

Wow! I didn’t realize how much we do until I actually wrote it all out. =) I bet you all have just as many traditions, I would love to hear about them! Anyhow, I hope you all have a very happy New Year full of fun and traditions! See you all next year!!

Golden New Year 2014!

Traditions- Part 1

Love thisKlint and I just celebrated our 10 year anniversary and while I feel like we are in that sweet spot where we know enough about each other, there are still some things that never fail to surprise me about him. One of those things is the differences in how our families celebrated holidays and special events, those traditions that help define our childhood. Klint’s family, while not half as broken as mine, didn’t really make a fuss about traditions. Holidays were celebrated but it was a more subtle celebration. My family, the very definition of crazy and broken, had a slew of traditions that accompanied every holiday and special event. Little things, big things, food, songs, and such. The first time I discovered how different we were in this respect I was really shocked, lol.

Now that we have children we are starting to define what our family traditions are, what we want our children to always remember about holidays and hope to pass down to their children. Some of these traditions come from my own family and some we created all on our own. I look forward to them, adore finding new traditions that fit our family, and love hearing the girls tell their friends about these special things. So I thought I would share some of them with you all, in case you are looking for some new traditions to add to this year! Enjoy! (Since there are so many holidays I am making this post a 2-part series, come back tomorrow for all the fall and winter holidays!)

  • New Year’s Eve- Kids get to stay up until midnight, we make Shirley Temples and eat lots of party food. Noise makers, poppers, hats, crazy glasses, and pj’s are a must!
  • New Year’s Day- We eat Chinese food, write down what we want to see, do, and accomplish this year. *We are starting a new tradition this year- we now have a memory jar to fill for the year with all the good things that happen throughout the year. For the New Year!
  • Chinese New Year- We go to the celebrations in Chinatown, give the girls money in red envelopes, eat oranges, and make Chinese Lanterns.
  • Valentine’s Day- Pretty standard stuff, everyone wear’s red, we give the girls some chocolate, I make pink hot cocoa and pink fudge.
  • Carnaval- This will be a new one this year for us. We have been talking a lot about Carnaval thanks to the movie Rio, so it is a great way to kick it off. I plan on making a brightly colored breakfast of fruit and colored pancakes, everyone will dress up, we will listen to samba music, and throw confetti in celebration! *This year Carnaval is before Valentine’s Day
  • St. Patrick’s Day- This is one of our most celebrated holidays since Klint is mostly Irish and I have Irish from my maternal side. We always start the day off with trying to catch a leprechaun. Usually the wee devils cause havoc in some way like turning our milk green, peeing in the potty (and not flushing), turning furniture upside down, etc. The girls like to make a trap so that they can get the gold. with a traditional breakfast of rainbow pancakes. They are super easy to make, just make sure you use the gel food coloring for the super bright color. I usually make Rainbow Playdough Cookies, rainbow fruit salad, and lots of green food. If the weather is good we head to the parade downtown, but no matter what we don shirts from Old Navy, paint rainbows and shamrocks on our face, and do crafts- all while listening to Irish music! (This rainbow scarf was a HUGE hit with the two older girls, this year Moira gets one!) Whew!! Here are past photos of our holiday. Rainbow pancakes! I make these every st.patricks day! • Easter- Easter with kids is so much fun!! I love making up Easter baskets for each girl, trying to pick out fun things for baskets. Usually we forgo the candy in favor of outdoor items like chalk, bubbles, seeds and gardening supplies, jump ropes, etc. We do give one chocolate bar, but that’s about it. We color Easter eggs, eat Cadbury Easter Eggs (Klint’s ultimate favorite candy), have an Easter Egg lunch, and I make the girls fun tee’s like these from a few years ago!! Something new we did last year was bury jelly beans and then in the morning suckers grew in their place!https://mysunnysideuplife.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/easter2011.jpg
  • Earth Day–  Earth day is usually celebrated by going for a hike, picking up any litter that we see, talking about recycling and the importance of taking care of the animals. We make yummy “Love the Earth” cupcakes and watch “The Lorax”. Now that the girls are older we will probably plant some seeds indoors and such. =)
  • Cinco de Mayo- I love Cinco de Mayo!! We make a taco bar, listen to all kinds of Mexican music, watch some of our favorite movies that take place in Mexico (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), drink “margaritas” (limade with salt on the rim, lol), and dress up in the colors of Mexico. Project Denneler: Maraca Cookies
  • Mother’s Day- Ah Mother’s Day! Usually we go out to eat somewhere I love, the girls make me cute jewelry and paint my nails, and generally everyone let’s me do what I want. No chores for Mom!
  • Memorial Day- This is another fun one! We usually pack up a picnic and head to the beach with friends, it is the first “real” beach day of the season. We get ice cream, go kayaking, and spend the whole day outside playing in the sun!
  • Father’s Day- We give Daddy some fun handmade presents, take him out for his favorite food, and let him do what he wants the whole day. Last year we made him a photo book, which the girls filled out with funny things like, “I love Daddy when________” answered with “he takes me shopping” =)
  • Summer Solstice- This is another beach holiday. We go to the beach, build a fire, watch the sunset, and give thanks for such a long day. We have a cook out, drink mango smoothies, and eat corn bread to represent the sun. bonfires <3
  • 4th of July- This fun festive day is usually celebrated with going to the parade, wearing new tee’s (from Old Navy, of course!), going to area activities, and a big cook out with friends. We have tons of sparklers and go see the fireworks! Of course I make red, white, and blue themed food and drinks. (If you want some ideas check out my Summer Loves Pinterest board!)

Whew!! Come back tomorrow for the rest of the year’s traditions and then again for our random traditions for birthday and such!!! (If you want a fun list of holidays around the world, here is a great calendar to check out!) Have a great night!

4th of July Yumminess!

Hello!!! So who is gearing up for the holiday on Wednesday? I know that we are looking forward to grilling out, eating some great food, and hopefully watching fireworks. This year, thanks to the magic of Pinterest, I am going to trying a whole bunch of new holiday recipes that are in the spirit of the 4th of July… here are just a few!

1. Red licorice wrapped in cute wrappers

2. Independence Sangria

3. Dipped Pretzels

4. Brownie fruit kebabs

5. Layered drink for kids

6. Flag Breakfast Toast

Yummy right?! I’m so excited for the layered drink and the brownie kebabs!!! Strawberries and blueberries make the perfect addition to any celebration I think. =)

Happy grilling and celebrating fellow Americans!

I Pinned It and Did It!

There are many things that I have pinned and then did, especially recipes and crafts.

This is probably one of my favorite ones so far as the kids could do it and the results were adorable!

This is the original pin and original post that the pin originated from:

… and these are the ones we made. The girls really enjoyed using the pipe cleaners to stamp and a brush to add blue and gold glitter!

Instead of using puffy paint we just plain acrylic since I have so much of it… the results are very pretty and I can’t wait for them to all sport their shirts this week!!

I think I am going to make this a series of sorts since I do make and create a lot of things that I add to Pinterest…

anyone who wants to add their own Pinterest experiments please do so!

Cheers!

Happy Easter!

Today was a wonderful Easter! Here at Casa de Krebs we woke up at the early hour of 8am, searched for baskets, ate a lovely breakfast, and then ventured to my sorority sister’s house for an Easter egg hunt and lunch. Yummo! At our house the two older girls got flower pots instead of baskets filled with seeds, a teeny bit of chocolate, plastic eggs filled with loose change, nail polish, small trinkets, and other fun stuff. They also got Easter Edition Hex Bugs, sunglasses, chapstick, and kites. Moira got some small books, bunny crackers, crayons, and a coloring book. (This baby loooooves to color with anything she gets in her hands!)

This is kinda how our day went… (photo taking and baby wrangling don’t mix too well yet!)

I hope you all had a very Happy Easter!
